Makkah houses many historical mosques, some of them unfolding the story or event that happened during the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) period. One of the Islamic historical landmarks is Masjid Al-Jinn. Mosque of Jin or Masjid Al-Jin is located near the ancient graveyard of Jannat al-Mu'alla. When was Masjid Al Jinn Built?

The exact date of Masjid Al Jinn's construction is unknown, it is believed that this mosque was built in the 1700s century as an underground mosque. This mosque was built to mark the historical event of Jinns embracing Islam - Although there is no proof of who built this mosque, humans or Jinns. Since the second century of the Hijri calendar, the mosque has undergone several renovations. Today, the mosque is a popular destination for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims.

Did Jinns Build Masjid Al Jinn?

Due to the historical fact that Masjid Al Jinn is located on a very spot where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited the Holy Quran, upon hearing the great teachings of Islam, Jinn started to arrive in groups to listen to the recitation. Prophet Muhammad later met with the group of Jinns and invited them to embrace Islam. There is no proof or evidence that supports the mosque was built by Jinns. However, it is not clear till date who built the mosque.

Do Jinns Pray Inside the Mosque?

According to research, one night, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), while on his way from Taif to Nakhla Valley, decided to stay for some time and recite out loud some verses of the Holy Quran. A tribe of jinn coming from Yemen, upon hearing the great verses, stopped and listened to the recitation of the Holy Quran until Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) finished his recitation. It is believed that later, Jinns accepted Islam as described in Quran Surah Jin verses 1-2.

"Verily we have heard a wonderful Qur'an, which guides to the right path. Therefore, we believe in it and we will not associate partners with Allah with anyone."

Structure of Masjid Al Jinn

The mosque of the Jinn is believed to be the oldest mosque in Saudi Arabia. Many pilgrims and spiritual seekers visit this mosque throughout the year and say prayers in it. The mosque holds immense significance due to its history and housing pens Al Qalam which Prophet Sulayman used for writing the prayers for Jinns. Heavy volcanic stones were used in the construction of Masjid Al Jinn. The Jinn Mosque is adorned with intricately crafted flowers and geometric patterns, reflecting traditional Islamic designs and motifs. The prayer hall of Masjid Al Jinn is not very big, yet it can facilitate large gatherings. The Mosque has numerous Mehrabs, elaborately decorated with intricate designs and verses from the Holy Quran inscribed over them. Additionally, there are two mimbars, elevated platforms from where religious sermons and prayers are delivered to the congregation.
