[Salman Arain / 17-02-2024]

Masmak Palace, also known as Masmak Fort or Masmak Fortress, is a palace made of clay and mudbrick is located in the heart of Riyadh. Al Masmak Palace is one of the famous tourist destinations, standing gracefully for centuries and witnessing the great events in the history of the Kingdom. The centuries-old Al Masmak palace now serves as a museum displaying historical artifacts, beautiful artwork, weapons, old maps and other historically significant items. Al Masmak is an Arabic word meaning a strong, thick building that was once used as a warehouse until it was converted into a museum.

History of Al Masmak Palace

The 1500-year-old Al Masmak Palace was built in 1865, serving many purposes for centuries and was originally used as a military base due to its solid high walls. The palace, with solid walls and small openings for gun barrels and four watchtowers, made it a strong fort against enemies. In 1865, the Emir of Najd, Abdullah bin Faisal, started building the palace which was completed in 1895 by the Emir of Riyadh.

In January 1902, Emir Abdulaziz ibn Saud Al Saud, who was in exile in Kuwait, returned to Riyadh. He staged an ambush against the Masmak fortress, successfully reclaiming it from the House of Rasheed in the Battle of Riyadh. This pivotal event helped the Saudi authority to retake Riyadh's control and is widely regarded as a crucial milestone in the ultimate merger of Saudi Arabia. From 1902 to 1938, the Masmak Palace was used as a munitions warehouse by King Abdulaziz before he moved his court to Murabba Palace.

In 1979, the authorities of Riyadh decided to restore the ancient palace; after planning, the restoration process began. In 1995, the Ministry of Education and the Supreme Commission for the Development of Riyadh decided to convert Masmak Fort into a museum.

Al Masmak - Arabian Architectural Splendor

Al Masmak Fortress is made of mud bricks with thick walls and iconic watchtowers. The architectural marvel in Riyadh is a stunning reflection of the traditional Najd style. Countless efforts have been made to ensure that the ancient building remains preserved so that future generations can appreciate its beauty and rich cultural heritage.

Today, the Masmak Fortress is transformed into a museum dedicated to telling the story of the unification of Saudi Arabia to tourists. Al Masmak Fortress is divided into six significant parts,

  • The fortress gate on the western side, a massive wooden door with iron plating
  • The mosque to the left of the entrance is supported by several columns with shelves for placing the Quran.
  • Majlis (Diwaneyah), a rectangular shaped room in front of the entrance
  • Well, on the northeastern corner of the fort
  • Four conical thick walled watchtowers on four corners
  • Spacious courtyard surrounded by rooms with interconnected columns, housing stairs on the eastern side to access the first floor and roof
  • Three residential units, the ruler's residence, the treasury (bayt al-mal), and the guest house, were transformed into display halls.

The roofs of the Al Masmak fort boast beautifully painted palm trees on its roofs. Not only that, but it's also adorned with taramic and ethel wood. After undergoing several renovations, Al Masmak Fort became a rich museum showcasing a range of antics, from weapons used in the past to several agricultural artifacts.

Unfolding the Story of Heroism

The historical Al Masmak Palace dramatically portrays the stories of the Kingdom's unification, displaying the essence of important historical events such as the heroic battle to reclaim the control of Riyadh. One significant artifact that told the story of the important historical event is the remains of Bin Jiluwi's tip of the spear, prominently displayed at the entrance gate of the Al Masmak Fortress.

As tourists enter the Al Masmak Fortress, Bin Jiluwi's spearhead - a tangible historical piece, welcomes the visitors. Bin Jiluwi's spearhead is a moving reminder unfolding the events of the fierce battles fought within this thick-walled fortress.  This relic symbolizes the courage and determination of those soldiers who fearlessly played a crucial role in the unification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The tapestry of live photos remarkably displays the history and intricately weaves the story of the unification of Saudi Arabia, providing heroic stories of the battles fought by the leaders who shaped the destiny of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
